Plot Summary

The film begins with Robert Ledgard (Banderas), a renowned plastic surgeon, presenting his breakthrough in creating a synthetic skin that is resistant to burns and insect bites. He reveals that he has been secretly testing it on a female patient named Vera (Anaya), who is locked in his mansion. Vera spends her days reading, doing yoga, and watching television, while Robert watches her through a surveillance camera. He also provides her with clothes, food, and drugs to keep her calm.

Through flashbacks, it is revealed that Robert's wife was horribly burned in a car accident six years ago, and committed suicide after seeing her disfigured face. Robert blamed his daughter Norma's boyfriend Vicente (Jan Cornet) for the accident, and kidnapped him after he raped Norma at a wedding party. Norma suffered a mental breakdown and was institutionalized, where she later killed herself. Robert then performed a radical surgery on Vicente, transforming him into Vera, a replica of his late wife.

Robert becomes obsessed with Vera, and treats her as his lover. He also plans to give her a new identity and life with him. However, his plans are disrupted when his half-brother Zeca (Roberto Álamo), a fugitive who has just robbed a jewelry store, arrives at his mansion. Zeca recognizes Vera as his former lover Gal, who was Robert's wife's sister and Vicente's mother. Zeca rapes Vera, but Robert kills him before he can escape.

Vera convinces Robert to let her go outside for the first time in six years. She meets Marilia (Marisa Paredes), Robert's housekeeper and mother, who tells her that she is actually Vicente. She also reveals that Zeca was Robert's biological brother, and that they were both the result of a rape by a gardener when she was young. She begs Vera to kill Robert and free herself.

Vera returns to Robert's bedroom, where he confesses his love for her and proposes to marry her. She agrees, but stabs him in the chest with a syringe filled with poison. She then puts on a dress and a wig, and leaves the mansion with Robert's money and documents. She goes to Vicente's family shop, where she reunites with his mother Gal (also played by Anaya) and tells her that she is Vicente.
